Gynecomastia or abnormal mammary growth in men is a disorder that is becoming more common every day, affecting between 40 and 60% of male population. It has been associated to the use of some type of drugs or medical disorders, but in most cases there is no explanation for the appearance of this complication.
For those men that worry about their appearance, breast reduction is of great help. The procedure consists in removing the extra fatty and glandular tissue, and skin if needed.
The best candidates for this surgical correction are all physically and mentally healthy men.
Those patients that smoke drink or use certain type of drugs, like marihuana, are not good candidates because these drugs may be the reason for this pathology. In these cases, patients are advised to suspend consumption and observe if breast size reduces before the surgery.
Even though this procedure is very safe when performed by a properly trained surgeon, there are always risks of complications. In the case one of these complications appears, your surgeon will handle it with no further problems. Losing the sensibility of the nipple is perfectly normal after the procedure and it will take 6 month t a year to gain it back.
The first appointment with your surgeon is very important. Your doctor will examine your mammas and possible reasons for their abnormal growth, such as hepatic disorders, estrogen medication usage or anabolizant steroids.
Your plastic surgeon will indicate a mammography or a mammary ecosonogram to analyze the mamma composition. Once your surgeon has determined the amounts of fatty and glandular tissue your mamma has, he will chose the best surgical technique for your case. Don not hesitate in asking and clarifying all your doubt.

THE SURGERY
The extra glandular tissue is the cause of gynecomastia. This excess will be removed with a scalpel through an incision performed in the areola or armpit area, along with extra fatty tissue and skin.
If gynecomastia is caused by extra fatty tissue, your surgeon will use liposuction as surgical treatment. Liposuction will be performed through an incision done in the areola area using a cannula that is connected to an aspiration bomb. This way the extra mammary fat is absorbed improving your body shape.
