BREAST RECONSTRUCTION OR MASTECTOMY
Breast reconstruction after it being removed because of cancer or any other disease (mastectomy) is one of the most gratifying surgical procedures in plastic surgery, today. New techniques and materials allow surgeons to create a similar mamma in shape and texture to the remaining mamma.
Breasts reconstruction’s main objectives are:
-
To reconstruct the mamma with a natural looks, including if the patient wants that, the nipple and the areola.
-
To eliminate the needs of prosthesis, allowing the patient to wear new pieces of clothes cleavages and bathing suits.
-
To fill the emptiness left in the chest, to restore body image, to improve patient’s way of life.
Patient’s satisfaction.
WHO AND WHEN CAN HAVE BREAST RECONSTRUCTION?
Almost every mastectomee women can, from medicine’s point of view, be a candidate for breast reconstruction. The perfect candidate is the one that could have the entire tumor removed during the mastectomy. When mastectomy and breast reconstructions are done during the same surgery (immediate reconstruction) the patient wakes up from the intervention with a proper breast outline, avoiding the experience of feeling and looking amputated. The psychological benefit of this technique is obvious.
In some cases, though, reconstruction might or has to be postponed (late reconstruction). Some patients are not comfortable talking about breast reconstruction just after been diagnosed with breast cancer; some others simply want the strict amount of surgeries needed to cure the cancer they have. Some times, when using complex procedures is wise to delay the reconstruction so the intervention would be simpler, traumatizing less the patient’s body. Brest reconstruction may also be postponed if there are other medical problems, such as obesity or hypertension.
On the other hand, immediate reconstruction is a team work between the surgeon that removes the mamma and the plastic surgeon. The lack of a plastic surgeon at the hospital is reason enough to delay breast reconstruction.
In any case, the most important thing is to have all the proper information about reconstructive options. Go Back |
